Xiaomi says sales in China are close to full recovery

Failure in global sales of Xiaomi smartphones will still be felt in March and April.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi today said it is seeing signs of a strong sales recovery in China as the country begins to recover from the coronavirus outbreak.

"The Chinese market has entered a full recovery phase and has already recovered to 80-90% of normal levels," said Shou Zi Chew, the company's CFO, commenting on the next financial report. He admitted that sales in China fell in the first quarter due to the coronavirus outbreak, but did not specify to what extent.

According to Chu, he expects demand for smartphones to be steady worldwide, even despite the spread of coronavirus. The decline in global sales of Xiaomi smartphones will still be felt in March and April, but the recovery should also begin in May.

Over the past few years, the expansion of overseas activities has become a key strategy for Xiaomi and other Chinese smartphone makers as the domestic smartphone market has experienced a period of decline.
