In Canada, the Albatross drone will be tested

The drone is equipped with an onboard collision avoidance system Casia.


Transport Canada has approved the Albatross drone test. The flight will take place outside the operator's line of sight. According to Flightglobal, the vehicle will be equipped with an automatic system of collision avoidance in the air Casia. This system is developed by the American company Iris Automation. During the flight, the drone will not be subject to additional surveillance by people on the ground or by radar stations.


Air collision avoidance is one of the key technologies in the development and widespread use of unmanned aerial vehicles. With such systems, drones will be able to conduct safe flights in common with manned vehicles in airspace. They will be able to automatically detect other objects in the air and alter their flight path to avoid collision. Aerial collision avoidance systems for drones are currently being developed by several companies around the world.

The Casia system consists of an optronic camera, a calculator and software capable of processing high definition video images in real time. The software is developed using machine learning technology. It is capable of detecting airborne objects in the camera image according to the course of the drone flight, classifying them and calculating the new trajectory of the drone flight so as to avoid collision.

Canadian drone operator MVT Geo-solutions will test Albatross with Casia. The tests will be conducted at the range in the city of Almma in the province of Quebec. It is located 270 kilometres north of the city of Quebec. A series of Albatross flight tests are planned with the Casia system. If they all succeed, Iris Automation plans to apply to Transport Canada for regular drone flights outside the operator's line of sight. During these flights, drones will be used to inspect infrastructure.

The first flight test of the Casia system was conducted in April last year in Kansas. They were conducted with the approval of the U.S. Federal Civil Aviation Administration.
