The compact Abbott ID NOW performs the Coronavirus test (COVID-19) in just 5 minutes

Abbott announced it has received FDA approval to use the fastest test for a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19). The compact Abbott ID NOW, weighing 3 kilograms and the size of an average toaster, takes only 5 minutes to determine a positive result, while a negative result is given in 13 minutes.

The undoubted convenience of the Abbott ID NOW is that it can be used outside the walls of a specialized clinic. For example, it can be installed in the office of a therapist. Abbott has already announced an increase in production of ID NOW from next week, the company's goal is to provide 50,000 COVID-19 tests per day in the United States.

Molecular COVID-19 testing in healthcare facilities can significantly increase test coverage and reduce time to obtain a result. The technology is quite simple: a small segment of SARS-CoV-2 RNA is taken, this segment is "amplified" until it is detected in the patient's biomaterial. As a result, a positive response to the study appears in 5 minutes, and a negative one, of course, takes more time - up to 13 minutes. It should be noted that the device is useful even if it is not used to diagnose COVID-19: it can diagnose influenza A and B (for example, H5N1 - "avian influenza") and respiratory syncytial virus.
