Supercomputer Summit, involved in the fight against SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus

SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is spreading rapidly worldwide, and researchers are constantly looking for ways to stop it. Supercomputers that can perform very complex calculations in a short amount of time are also useful. Such is Summit, which has more than 200 thousand processor cores.

Chinese coronavirus is a growing threat. We need quick action that will fight the disease. For this, computer simulation is also necessary. That is why a supercomputer has been made that can do this in a very short time.

Researchers had to simulate finding the right protein. On a regular computer, such calculations would last even months. Meanwhile, the Summit supercomputer made it possible to get results in a day or two. This was made possible thanks to the very large processing power.

Specialists used up to 20800 processor cores, 188416000 CUDA cores and 250 PB NVRAM, which Summit has. The results obtained are not yet a cure for coronavirus. However, they significantly affect the acceleration of the search for a suitable solution.
