Kirin 1020 debuts on Huawei Mate 40, but Huawei will have another 5nm chip this year

Samsung will manufacture the Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 processor at 5 nm, but this will only happen in 2021. TSMC will be the only factory to begin mass production of 5nm chips in 2020. Its main customers are Huawei and Apple.

According to the TSMC plan, 5-nanometer products will be officially launched into mass production in the first half of this year, and the third quarter will be a peak supply season, because Apple and Huawei plan to launch new flagship smartphones in early autumn. The iPhone 12 with the Apple A14 single-chip system will be released in September, while the Huawei Mate 40 series with the Kirin 1020 SoC will follow in October.

The Kirin 990 is expected to be succeeded by the Kirin 1020 mobile platform, code-named Baltimore. Compared to the Kirin 990, performance can be improved by an impressive 50%. This jump will be achieved thanks to the transition from the Cortex-A76 cores to the Cortex-A78.

It is also reported that TSMC will launch another 5-nanometer chip by order of Huawei in mass production, details of which are not yet available.
