8 cores, 16 threads and 5.3 GHz in a laptop. Intel Core i9-10980HK surprises

Intel processors for desktop PCs have recently quietly increased the clock speed - the old process technology, which does not allow keeping TDP within reasonable limits, affects. With laptops about the same story. But now on the Web there are details about the top model Core i9-10980HK, and they look very interesting.

This eight-core processor lit up in some unnamed laptop, and that, in turn, lit up in the base of the Geekbench benchmark. The CPU supports multithreading, so eight of its real cores in the operating system turn into 16 virtual ones. But this is not the main thing, the main thing is the frequency: the base one is 3.1 GHz, but the maximum one reaches the level of 5.3 GHz! For a mobile computer, this is an achievement. What is interesting: Core i9-10980HK previously appeared in the Geekbench database, but its maximum frequency was lower - 5.0 GHz. It may well be that Intel has prepared some special version of the processor - the overclocked one, which will finally be able to surpass the 8-core Ryzen 7 4800H.

Indeed, the increase in frequency has borne fruit: in the single-threaded test, the Core i9-10980HK earned 6321 points, in multi-threaded test - 32038 points. For comparison, the result of Ryzen 7 4800H is 5228 and 31614 points, respectively. Ryzen defeated? Perhaps so, but the only question is at what price. A laptop based on a 5.3 GHz processor should have not only a good battery, but also a perfect cooling system.
