5 important signs of a bad smartphone

The smartphone industry is growing rapidly, a mobile device may become obsolete in a year. In 2018, OnePlus 6 was one of the most balanced gadgets, two years later its design was outdated. A bang, an external fingerprint scanner is already a sign of an old smartphone, new ones get a drop-shaped cutout and an on-screen fingerprint scanner. A number of functions and technologies are in principle unsuitable for use. Life tells by what signs mobile devices need to be screened out.

MicroUSB

Last year, smartphone makers began massively abandoning the ancient connector. If earlier he met up to the segment of 300-400 dollars, now he is retiring even at the initial price level - last fall Redmi 8A came out for 8 thousand rubles with a modern USB-C.

In 2020, microUSB says goodbye to smartphones up to $ 150 (and, it seems, this is not for long), in other price levels it must be totally ignored. The connector is uncomfortable - the plug of the power supply is stuck only on one side. In addition, almost all modern devices are equipped with USB-C. This is a good opportunity to charge a smartphone and, for example, a laptop with one cord.

USB-C is a real connector. If you have an iPhone, the alternative is Lightning. With microUSB, it’s a shame to sell a smartphone.

Weak battery

The mobile industry is committed to increasing autonomy. In 2019, Apple made the case in the latest iPhones thicker than its predecessors in order to supply a more capacious battery and increase battery life.

Xiaomi paid attention to the battery this summer - the Mi 9T, Mi 9T Pro and Mi 9 Lite replaced the Mi 9 and Mi 9 SE with weak batteries, with increased batteries and longer battery life.

Manufacturers realized that reliability is more important than a slim ergonomic body. Now smartphones definitely live at least one day at moderate load, and on average - one and a half.

The chin

In 2017, manufacturers switched to 18 x 9 from 16 x 9 screens and gradually began to reduce the frame. In 2018, the displays lengthened to 19.5 x 9, with them the bangs replaced the classic frames. And the main drawback of Android-smartphones with this design is the chin, a thickened lower edge of the frame.

This stood out iPhone X in 2018, when it was copied by absolutely everything. The edges of his frame were the same thickness, while all Android clones were striking a beard. The worst thing was when a company logo or a fingerprint scanner was placed on it - this is completely archaic.

A wide frame in 2020 is useless. The smartphone can be controlled using the screen, but only two buttons are needed - power and volume rocker. This is a dead area that should be minimized. The chin is not only useless, but also ugly.

TFT screen (LCD)

In 2020, even entry-level smartphones, for $ 80-90, get IPS screens. With low brightness and resolution, but accurate color reproduction and a wide viewing angle. They won the competition and supplanted the TFT. Before IPS, such screens were met by state employees and performed the role of Tony Robbins - they motivated people to develop in order to buy a smartphone more expensive.

The worst side of TFT screens is color reproduction. It is low, because the technology is limited to a matrix of 6 bits per channel, the pixels are arranged spirally, because of this the image contrast is reduced. The second weakness of LCD screens is viewing angles. It is enough to tilt the phone back - and the screen contrast will decrease.

IPS screens are not perfect - they consume more power, and sometimes the colors are not enough saturation. But for budget smartphones, they haven’t come up with anything better. TFTs are a thing of the past, you can find them only in old devices that have not yet been dismantled from warehouses. And do not disassemble.

Rear fingerprint scanner

The exception is its availability forgivably smartphones up to $ 200. A sub-screen fingerprint scanner is expensive and requires a high-quality AMOLED matrix, which will not burn out over time. In other cases, there are two options - the scanner is located either under the display or on the side, as in the Honor 20 or Samsung Galaxy S10e.

Oddly enough, manufacturers of flagships and middle-class devices have not yet abandoned the scanner on the rear panel. Last year, the flagships LG G8 ThinQ and ASUS ZenFone 5 received this. Although this indicates that the manufacturer has saved on components.
